University Place, WA

Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, opened in 2007 on a former sand and gravel mine on the shore of Puget Sound. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed it for Pierce County, which owns the course, and the mining terrain left behind steep grades, sand ridges and open ground with no trees at all except a single fir near the 15th green. The course is turfed in fescue and plays firm and fast, with holes routed along and above the water and a passenger rail line running between the course and the Sound. It is walking only. Several holes have multiple green sites and tee positions, so the routing can change day to day, and one hole can play as a par 4 or a par 5. Chambers Bay hosted the 2010 U.S. Amateur and the 2015 U.S. Open, won by Jordan Spieth. The greens were converted from fescue to poa annua in 2018 after criticism of their condition during that Open.

Pebble Beach, CA

The Links at Spanish Bay opened in 1987 at Pebble Beach and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. with Tom Watson and Sandy Tatum. The site had been a sand mining operation, and the project restored dune forms and native grasses across it before golf was routed through. The intent was a links-style course on the Monterey coast, with fescue turf, exposed dunes and holes running out along the shoreline. Poipu Bay Golf Course sits on the south shore of Kauai in Poipu, Hawaii.
