About this course

River Vale Country Club is a semi-private course in northern Bergen County, owned by the Township of River Vale and open to public daily-fee play alongside seasonal members. The course dates to 1931 and was designed by Orrin Smith, who spent years working with Donald Ross. The par-72 layout plays 6,504 yards from the blue tees, with tree-lined fairways that punish wayward driving on a moderate-length, classic routing. It has been voted the best public golf course in Bergen County by readers of 201 Magazine multiple years running. The facility includes a Toptracer driving range, and the bar and restaurant are open during the golf season.

Designed by golf course architect Tom Winton, Sprain Lake has small greens and rolling terrain, with a long, narrow routing that produces a mostly linear, back-and-forth style of play. Water hazards come into play on a number of holes, adding to the course's difficulty despite its modest length. The course is operated by Westchester County's golf division alongside several sister municipal courses and is open to public play. It measures 6,110 yards from the back tees at a par of 70 over 18 holes.
