Links of North Dakota
Authentic links golf on the North Dakota prairie
About this course
The Links of North Dakota sits on bluffs above Lake Sakakawea near Ray, in the northwestern corner of the state. Architect Stephen Kay designed the course, moving a minimal amount of earth to create a true links-style layout on the rolling, wind-exposed land, and it opened in July 1995.
The course has bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens, wide-open corridors, and more than 80 sand bunkers, with no water hazards in play. Native prairie grass rough and near-constant wind are the primary defenses, and five sets of tees range from roughly 5,200 to just over 7,000 yards.
The facility is public and remote, roughly 28 miles from Williston, and offers on-site cabins and RV sites for golfers making the trip. It has drawn a following among golfers seeking an authentic ground-game experience uncommon in the region.

Water comes into play on three of the nine holes, and the course is operated by the Williston Parks and Recreation District as part of the city's public recreation offerings. Rapid population growth tied to the oil industry has led the district to plan a larger redevelopment of the site, with architect Kevin Norby engaged to design a new eighteen-hole routing as part of a broader mixed-use project on the adjoining former airport land.
