Pursell Farms (FarmLinks)
Hurdzan/Fry resort design at Pursell Farms in the Appalachian foothills
About this course
Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, Alabama, is home to FarmLinks, a Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry design that opened in 2003. The course was built by the Pursell family, who ran a turf fertilizer business, and it was created as a working research and demonstration course for superintendents.
That purpose shaped the golf. Different grasses, drainage systems and green constructions were installed across the property, and the routing moves through pasture, hardwood and creek bottom with substantial elevation change over its 18 holes.
The course is open to resort guests and public play, and remains part of a larger farm property with lodging, shooting sports and event facilities.

Alpine Bay Country Club
Alpine, AL · 18 mi away
Alpine Bay Golf Club is located in Alpine, Alabama, in the Coosa River hill country east of Birmingham, as part of the Alpine Bay Resort community. The 18-hole, par-72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in the early 1970s, playing as a links-style layout that does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes; hole nine sits at the farthest point from the clubhouse. Jones built landing areas on the par 4s and 5s, rewarding drives placed short of the steep slopes beyond them. The course is open to public play, with a pro shop, beverage cart service on weekends and holidays, and back tees stretching to roughly 6,558 yards. Bent greens and Bermuda fairways are maintained year round, with rates varying by day of the week.

The Oaks
Pelham, AL · 31 mi away
The Oaks sits inside Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama, just south of Birmingham, on the park's wooded, hilly terrain near the Double Oak Mountain ridge. The 18-hole, par-72 layout was designed by Earl Stone and opened in the early 1970s, running through mature stands of oak and pine with Bermuda greens and tees. Fairways roll with the park's natural contours, and wildlife regularly crosses the course. The course is public and operated by Alabama State Parks, with tee times bookable up to six days ahead and walk-ons accepted at the starter's discretion. Amenities include a lighted driving range, chipping and putting greens, a pro shop, and an on-site grille. Blue tees play 6,842 yards; the course has hosted local qualifying events.
