Joel Goldstrand

Joel Goldstrand (1939-2022) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in Worthington, where he starred on a state championship high school team before playing on the PGA Tour and later serving as a club professional in Minneapolis. He shifted into course design and, over more than three decades, laid out or contributed to close to a hundred courses across the Upper Midwest. A member of the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame, Goldstrand focused his career on affordable, well-designed public golf rather than high-profile destination courses, concentrating most of his work within a day's drive of the Twin Cities. Saint Croix National

Somerset, WI

Saint Croix National is a public golf course in Somerset, Wisconsin, in the St. Croix River valley east of the Twin Cities. Joel Goldstrand designed the course on the site of the former Snowcrest ski hill, and it opened in 1996. The par-72 layout plays 6,909 yards from the back tees over rolling, wooded ground with elevation changes carried over from the ski hill. A 2023 clubhouse expansion added a restaurant, golf simulators and an 18-hole putting course.

Perham Lakeside Country Club

Perham, MN

Perham Lakeside Golf Club sits just north of Perham in west central Minnesota's lakes region, south of Little Pine Lake. The club began in 1946 as a nine-hole course on largely open, flat ground with few trees. Minnesota architect Joel Goldstrand was hired during the 1980s to expand the facility to 18 holes, and returned in the late 1990s to add a third nine, giving the club its current 27-hole layout split into the Oak, Maple and Pine courses. Each nine has its own character, from the oak-lined Oak course to the more open, larger-tee Pine nine carved from pine woods. The club is open to the public and offers a full practice facility along with a restaurant and event center. Golfers can play any single nine or combine two for an 18-hole round.

Legends Club

Prior Lake, MN

Legends Club is an 18-hole daily-fee golf course straddling the border of Prior Lake and Lakeville, Minnesota, built on a wooded and marshy property with a 30-acre lake, creeks and wetlands. The course was designed by architect Garrett Gill of Gill Miller and stretches to roughly 7,100 yards from the back tees. Water comes into play on numerous holes, including a lake bordering the second green, and the routing is intended to reward careful course management over raw length. Managed by Tradition Golf as part of a small portfolio of Minnesota courses, Legends Club is open to public play with GPS-equipped carts.

The course opened in 1985 as Wedgewood Valley Golf Club, with a layout credited to multiple contributing architects including THK Associates and Kurt Sandness, and was renamed Prestwick after new ownership in the 1990s.
