Newton, MA

Newton Commonwealth Golf Course is an 18-hole public course in Newton, Massachusetts, about ten miles from downtown Boston. It began as a nine-hole course in 1897 under the name Commonwealth Club and was expanded and redesigned by Newton resident and architect Donald Ross in the 1920s. The course became public in the late 1970s when the city of Newton purchased the financially struggling private club. It is known for quick greens and relatively narrow, tree-lined fairways, with water and sand bunkers that come into play often, rewarding careful course management over pure length. The course is managed by Sterling Golf Management for the city and is open to residents and visitors, with online tee time booking available seven days ahead. A snack shop on site serves food and beer, and outing packages are offered for groups.
