About this course
The Loon is one of three courses at The Loon Golf Resort in Gaylord, Michigan, an area known for its concentration of golf resorts in the northern part of the state. The course sits on mostly flat ground on the east side of I-75, with a more open front nine and a more wooded back nine.
It was built in 1994 to a design attributed to instructor Butch Harmon, marketed as a Butch Harmon signature course. The layout favors generous landing areas, gently rolling fairways and large greens rather than tricked-up or heavily bunkered holes.
The Loon operates as part of a multi-course resort with on-site lodging and dining, and tee times are open to resort guests and outside visitors. From the back tees the course plays to about 6,677 yards, with additional tee sets bringing it down to under 4,900 yards.

Hawk Meadows Golf Club is located just north of downtown Howell in Livingston County, Michigan, on roughly 175 acres of rolling farmland. The course was built in 1969, originally opened as Dama Farms golf course, and was purchased and renamed Hawk Meadows around 2000. It plays as a full 18 holes with four sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 6,400 yards, offering a layout that is walkable and generally forgiving for higher-handicap players while still testing lower-handicap golfers on several holes. The club is open to public play daily from morning to dusk and includes a practice facility with grass tees for the driving range.
Treetops Resort - Masterpiece
Gaylord, MI · 6.0 mi away
The Masterpiece course sits at Treetops Resort near Gaylord in northern Michigan, on land overlooking the Pigeon River Valley with heavy forests and rolling hills. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the course, choosing the site in 1985 and opening it in 1987; the signature sixth hole drops about 120 feet with a wide view of the river valley below. The layout uses ravines, elevation changes and water hazards across 18 holes, playing to a par of 72 from a length of just over 7,000 yards at the back tees. It is generally considered the toughest of the resort's several courses. Masterpiece is open to the public as part of Treetops Resort, which also offers lodging and four other golf courses. Golf carts, tee-time bookings and a pro shop are available through the resort.
