About this course
Hancock Golf Course was founded in 1899 by Lewis Hancock, a former mayor of Austin, and was the original home of the Austin Country Club. That makes it one of the oldest golf courses in Texas, and the course is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today it is a nine-hole, par-35 municipal layout of about 2,600 yards in central Austin — walking only, with a simple pay station in place of a pro shop. The city renamed the course for Hancock in 1946.
Harvey Penick, one of the most influential teachers in the history of the game, learned golf on this ground. More than 125 years after it opened, Hancock still gives Austin a public course from the game's earliest days in America.
