About this course

Forest Dunes Golf Club opened in 2002 in Roscommon, Michigan, on a sandy site within the Huron National Forest, near the Au Sable River. Tom Weiskopf designed the course, which was largely built by 2000 but did not open for play until 2002. The front nine runs through a more parkland setting of pine and hardwood, while the back nine crosses sandy waste areas that have drawn comparisons to Pine Valley.

Fairways are wide and firm, and the greens are large and contoured to suit the natural sand base beneath them. From the back tees the course plays 7,116 yards at par 72, with a course rating of 75.2 and a slope of 146. The resort sits roughly three hours north of Detroit, and lodging is built around the first tee so guests can walk straight from their rooms to the course.

Forest Dunes shares its property with Tom Doak's reversible Loop course, played clockwise one day and counterclockwise the next.

Forest Dunes Golf Club (The Loop)

Roscommon, MI · 0.0 mi away

The Loop at Forest Dunes in Roscommon, Michigan, is a Tom Doak design that opened in 2016. It is a reversible course: one set of 18 greens and fairways played clockwise one day as the Black Course and counterclockwise the next as the Red. Building it that way forced particular choices. Greens are open in front from both directions, bunkers sit away from the direct line so they work on either routing, and there are almost no forced carries. The result is two genuinely different tests from the same ground. The resort posts which direction is in play on a given day. The course sits on sandy soil in the Huron National Forest, next to the original Forest Dunes course.

The Bootlegger at Forest Dunes

Roscommon, MI · 0.6 mi away

The Bootlegger at Forest Dunes is a 10-hole short course in Roscommon, Michigan, designed by Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns and opened in 2020. Holes range from 50 to 140 yards, built for quick, informal rounds rather than full scorecards. The course sits between the resort's Forest Dunes and The Loop courses and takes its name from the Purple Gang, a Detroit Prohibition-era group that once used a ranch on the property. Players are encouraged to bring a few clubs and play at their own pace. It is part of the Forest Dunes resort.

Garland Lodge & Resort (Monarch)

Lewiston, MI · 19 mi away

Monarch is one of four 18-hole courses at Garland Lodge & Golf Resort, set within roughly 3,000 acres of Northern Michigan wilderness near Lewiston. Designed by Ron Otto, Monarch is the resort's longest course and is considered its most demanding, running through meadows, lakes, streams, and mature hardwoods and pines. It features very large green complexes and wide fairways, along with resident bald eagles that nest on the property. Monarch operates as a public resort course, available to lodge guests and outside visitors alike. Garland's practice facilities include a large driving range, putting greens, and chipping areas shared across its courses, with play generally available through the spring, summer, and fall season.
