About this course

Elk Rapids Golf Club is a public nine hole course on the west shore of Elk Lake in Elk Rapids, Michigan. Village residents built the course to draw tourists after voters approved a bond for the project in 1922, and architect Donald Ross designed the layout on a former farm site the following year. Construction began in 1923 and the course held its grand opening in July 1924, making it one of the older Ross designs still in operation. The par 36 routing plays a little over 3,000 yards and follows a classic out and back links style along the lakefront, taking about two hours to walk. The club is member owned through stock shares but has historically kept the course open for public play as well. A lakefront clubhouse includes a pro shop and patio space, and the course is recognized as a Michigan historical site.

Grand Traverse Resort (Wolverine)

Acme, MI · 9.3 mi away

The Wolverine is one of three golf courses at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme, Michigan, along East Grand Traverse Bay in the northern part of the state. It was designed by Gary Player, his first signature design in Michigan, and makes use of both lowland wetland terrain on the front nine and higher, wooded ground with bay views on the back nine. The design offers four sets of tees so it can be set up for a range of ability levels, and water comes into play on more than a dozen holes because of the enhanced wetlands built into the front nine. The Wolverine operates alongside The Bear and Spruce Run at the resort and is open each golf season to resort guests and outside visitors who book tee times through the resort's golf operation.

Shanty Creek Resort (Summit)

Bellaire, MI · 12 mi away

Summit is the original golf course at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, Michigan, built when resort founder Roy Deskin added golf to the ski and lodging business he had started on Torch Lake. William Diddel designed the course, and it opened in 1965 as the Deskin Course before later being renamed Summit. Length is not the main challenge here; the course instead rewards a strong short game, with fast greens and a par-three tee option on every hole that makes it approachable for junior golfers. The routing winds across the rolling hills of Antrim County that also give Shanty Creek its ski terrain. Summit operates alongside four other courses at the resort, all bookable through one golf shop, and is open to resort guests and outside visitors from April through October.
