Architect

William Flynn

William Flynn (1890-1945) began his career shaping Merion Golf Club's East Course in Pennsylvania alongside Hugh Wilson before establishing his own influential design practice. He is best known for the present course at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island, a repeated U.S. Open venue, along with Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado and the Cascades Course at The Homestead in Virginia. Flynn partnered with engineer Howard Toomey to refine construction methods, particularly drainage and green building, that improved playability and conditioning for the era. His designs are noted for strong, natural-looking green complexes and routings that made thoughtful use of elevation change. Though he worked with less self-promotion than some Golden Age contemporaries, Flynn's championship courses remain highly regarded for their enduring strategic challenge.
