Newry, ME

Sunday River Golf Club sits five miles from Bethel in the western Maine mountains, part of the Sunday River ski resort owned by Boyne Resorts. The course occupies a northwest-facing hillside with views across the valley to the Mahoosuc Range and Old Speck Mountain, and fall foliage frames many holes. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 2005, the layout uses stone retaining walls to carve fairway terraces into steep slopes and ravines, with tiered greens, rock outcroppings, wetlands and the Merrill Brook coming into play. Wide fairways keep the course playable despite the terrain. Sunday River operates as a semi-private, resort-affiliated club open to guests and the public. Amenities include a clubhouse with dining, a pro shop and a practice range; carts are commonly used given the elevation changes.
