Jackson Park Golf Course
Chicago, IL
Jackson Park Golf Course opened on May 11, 1899, on the South Side lakefront grounds that had hosted the World's Columbian Exposition six years earlier. Designed by Tom Bendelow, it was the first public golf course in Chicago and one of the first municipal courses in the country. The course returned in 2026 as a fully renovated 18-hole layout, the only 18-holer in the Chicago Park District's golf portfolio. Mature trees and large greens carry the bones of the old design across the 500-acre park. Generations of Chicago golfers learned the game here, and the course remains a regular home for the Chicago City Amateur. For public golf in America, this is one of the places where it started.
Sidney Marovitz Golf Course
Chicago, IL
Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course opened on June 15, 1932 as Waveland Golf Course, built on landfill reclaimed from Lake Michigan. Edward B. Dearie Jr. designed the course, and the city renamed it in 1991 for Sydney Marovitz, a longtime champion of public golf in Chicago. The nine holes sit between Lake Shore Drive and the lake, a tight, flat loop with water views on nearly every shot. Its lakefront clock tower is one of the most recognizable sights in Chicago golf. For decades this has been the most played public course in the city: a place where Chicago golf's everyday history is still being made, open to anyone from dawn to dark.
South Shore Golf Course
Chicago, IL
The nine-hole course at South Shore sits on the grounds of the old South Shore Country Club, a lakefront club whose clubhouse and grounds date to the early 1900s. When the private club era ended, the Chicago Park District acquired the property in the mid-1970s and opened the golf to everyone. The course plays along the Lake Michigan shoreline with open views across the water, a flat and walkable nine holes that serves one of the South Side's busiest neighborhoods. The former clubhouse, now the South Shore Cultural Center, is a designated Chicago Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The golf course around it remains a rare surviving piece of the city's early lakefront club history that anyone can still play.
Marquette Park Golf Course
Chicago, IL
Marquette Park is a nine-hole, par-36 municipal course on Chicago's southwest side, inside the 300-plus-acre Marquette Park. Tom Bendelow laid it out, and the park lagoons put water in play on seven of the nine holes at 3,246 yards. It is certified through the Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary program and has a full grass practice range, two short-game greens and a putting green. The Chicago Park District owns it; Indigo Sports manages day-to-day operations. BogeyMap has not confirmed the year the course itself opened.
