Dye routed the course through wooded terrain along the James River, with the front nine playing mostly inland before the closing holes turn back toward the water. The par-3 17th sits on a bluff above the river, and the final three holes run along the James River shoreline. The course is part of Kingsmill Resort and is played by resort guests.

The longest hole, the par-5 15th, stretches 634 yards from the tips. Rees Jones later renovated the course, adding modern turf and improved bunker drainage while keeping Trent Jones's original routing and green complexes.
