About this course
Val Halla Golf & Recreation Center is the town of Cumberland's municipal course, an 18-hole, par-72 layout designed by Phil Wogan and open since 1964. From the back tees it stretches past 6,500 yards with a slope of 130, but multiple tee boxes keep it approachable for every level of player. Bent grass greens and bluegrass fairways give it better conditioning than most municipals in southern Maine.
The course sits about 15 minutes from Portland, which makes its combination of quality, walkability, and modest green fees genuinely hard to explain. A driving range, putting green, and a town-run recreation center round out the facility, and the town keeps tee times bookable to the public seven days out. This is exactly the kind of well-run municipal that locals quietly hope visitors never find.
