Lakewood Golf Club is located in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The course opened in 1961 as Lakewood Country Club, designed by architect Robert Bruce Harris, and for more than two decades hosted the New Orleans Open on the PGA Tour, drawing champions such as Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Billy Casper. The New Orleans Firefighters Pension and Relief Fund purchased the property in 2003 and converted it to public play. After Hurricane Katrina forced its closure, the course underwent a renovation led by architect Ron Garl and reopened in 2009 as an 18-hole, par-72 layout stretching close to 7,000 yards. Today Lakewood operates as a daily-fee public course, drawing local golfers and visitors to New Orleans. It remains part of a larger planned mixed-use development on the surrounding acreage.
