The New Orleans Firefighters Pension and Relief Fund purchased the property in 2003 and converted it to public play. After Hurricane Katrina forced its closure, the course underwent a renovation led by architect Ron Garl and reopened in 2009 as an 18-hole, par-72 layout stretching close to 7,000 yards. Today Lakewood operates as a daily-fee public course, drawing local golfers and visitors to New Orleans. It remains part of a larger planned mixed-use development on the surrounding acreage.
