About this course
Schenectady Municipal Golf Course opened in 1935 in Schenectady, New York, designed by A.F. Knight, a General Electric engineer and inventor of the Schenectady Putter, together with golf professional Jim Thompson. Construction began in 1933 and was largely funded through Depression-era work relief programs including the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and Civil Works Administration.
The 18-hole course, known locally as Muni, stretches to about 6,600 yards among stately oaks and pines, with fast, undulating greens and tight fairways. It is owned by the city and open to the public.

Orchard Creek Golf Club
Altamont, NY · 7.6 mi away
Orchard Creek Golf Club is a public course in Altamont, New York, about 25 minutes outside Albany, built through the hillsides and creek banks of a still-operating apple orchard run by the Abbruzzese family. It opened for play in 1999 and was designed by Paul Cowley. The hilly terrain along the Bozen Kill Creek was left largely intact, producing blind tee shots and dramatic uphill and downhill holes rather than heavily graded fairways. Apple trees line many holes, blooming in spring and offering fruit to golfers in fall, and the course has a reputation for fast, undulating greens. Orchard Creek and the adjoining orchard business were listed for sale in 2026 after nearly 60 years of family ownership, though the course remained open to the public as of that listing.

The course was designed by architect Chuck Baltzel and operates today as a semi-private club open to public play. The layout is set in the rolling terrain around the Rensselaer County lake region, with course reviewers describing large, fast greens and a generally challenging test for the area. Facilities include a grass-tee driving range and private lessons through the club's PGA staff. Beyond the course, Burden Lake offers indoor golf simulators featuring dozens of virtual courses for year-round play, along with a clubhouse restaurant and bar known as Jack Kelly's Tavern by the Green. The club welcomes both members and public golfers with advance tee time booking.
