Lubbock, TX — Spruce Run Golf Course, located in Gaylord, Michigan, is the original course at Grand Traverse Resort, designed by William Newcomb and opened in 1979. Newcomb's design philosophy for Spruce Run aimed to create a fun and challenging experience, offering a more forgiving yet strategic round compared to its more formidable counterparts. The course is characterized by its lush bentgrass tees, greens, and fairways, seamlessly integrated into the picturesque Northern Michigan landscape. Water hazards come into play on 13 of its 18 holes, complemented by 60 strategically placed sand bunkers across 17 holes, demanding thoughtful shot-making. The fairways are famously lined with numerous fir and spruce trees, giving the course its distinctive name and enhancing its natural beauty. Historically, Spruce Run hosted the Michigan Open from 1981 through 1984, underscoring its championship pedigree.
