About this course

Pinehurst No. 4 shares the Sandhills ground beside No. 2 and has been rebuilt more than once since its origins in 1919 as a Donald Ross course. Gil Hanse completed the current version in 2018, replacing a 2000 Tom Fazio redesign.

Hanse stripped out the rough and formal bunkering and returned the edges of the holes to sand, wiregrass and native scrub, matching the character of the restored No. 2 next door. The greens are large with more internal contour than No. 2's crowned surfaces, and the routing uses ridges and old sand faces that were flattened in earlier versions.

It plays about 7,100 yards, is walkable with caddies, and is open to resort guests and members. No. 4 hosted stroke play for the 2019 U.S. Amateur alongside No. 2.
