About this course

Ould Newbury Golf Club is a nine-hole, semi-private course in Newbury, off Route 1. It sits on rolling ground near the Parker River marshes, a short drive from downtown Newburyport. The club opened on September 4, 1916, making it one of the older continuously operating clubs on the North Shore. Benjamin Pearson, Dr. Charles S. Ingham, and Joseph Dummer led the effort to lease 60 acres from Governor Dummer Academy and raised $10,000 for construction in 1915. Scottish architect and golfer Jim Lowe directed the layout.

The course measures roughly 3,100 yards to a par of 35. A full round plays to about 6,200 yards because the second nine uses different tees. The property's varied terrain and elevated, well-defended greens are notable. The club maintains an unpretentious approach with accessible dues and public tee times alongside member play. A renovated pub and deck contribute to a neighborhood club atmosphere. The season runs from April through the fall.

Black Swan Country Club sits on 120 acres in Georgetown, Massachusetts, about 30 miles north of Boston, with a large Victorian-style clubhouse overlooking the golf course. The property was previously home to a private club known as the Georgetown Club, which closed in 2009. The 18-hole course was designed by New England architect Philip Wogan and first opened around 1990. New ownership reopened it to the public in 2010 and has since renovated tee boxes, green complexes and bunkers, lengthening several holes along the way. Black Swan plays to a par of 72 and stretches to roughly 6,800 yards from the back tees, with water crossing many holes and a series of bridges connecting them. The club operates as a semi-private facility open to public play alongside its membership, and it also hosts weddings and other events.

Cape Ann Golf Club occupies a coastal site above the salt marshes along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway in Essex, Massachusetts, with views toward the Essex River and Crane Beach. The nine-hole course was designed by Eugene 'Skip' Wogan, a protege of Donald Ross, and opened for play in 1931. Owned and operated by the Stavros family since its founding, the course has been gradually updated with new bunkers, tee boxes and an irrigation pond while keeping its original character intact. It is the only public golf course on Cape Ann, offering walkable nine-hole rounds with a clubhouse pub for food after the round.

Merrimack Valley Golf Club

Methuen, MA · 13 mi away

Merrimack Valley Golf Club is a semi-private 18-hole, par-70 course in Methuen, Massachusetts, originally designed by Donald Ross in 1906 and owned by the Kattar family since 1971. The course was rebuilt in 2008 by architect George F. Sargent Jr., who preserved several Ross holes and built the rest in that style; it plays 6,016 yards from the gold tees with a 70.0 rating and 128 slope. The property covers about 150 acres of rolling ground with views toward the wooded hills of southern New Hampshire, and the card carries seven par threes. The clubhouse, added with the renovation, looks out over 14 of the 18 holes, and there is a short-game area with a practice bunker but no driving range.
