About this course
Mt. Kineo Golf Course was built in the 1880s alongside the Kineo House, a grand resort hotel on Moosehead Lake that at its peak was the largest inland waterfront hotel in America. The course is believed to be the second-oldest in New England.
The nine holes sit on a peninsula beneath the cliffs of Mount Kineo itself. Getting there is part of the experience — golfers cross the lake by boat shuttle from Rockwood, the same arrival the resort's guests made more than a century ago.
The hotel is gone, but the course survives as one of the oldest places you can still play in America, a direct link to the era when golf arrived in the great northern resorts.
