About this course

Monroe Country Club, also known as Monroe Golf Club, sits a few miles outside downtown Monroe, Wisconsin, on land purchased from local farms in 1923. Golf at the site dates to 1924, when a nine-hole course opened on an 80-acre former farm; a second nine was added by 1969.

The original layout was set out by Chicago-based designer Harry Smead. The club operated as a private membership course for decades before opening its tee sheet to public play in 2020, following years of financial strain.

Three local business owners purchased the club in 2023, ahead of its 100th anniversary, and have since invested in course and clubhouse upgrades, including a shorter Little Gem course for beginners. The club remains open to public and member play today.

Rock River Country Club

Waupun, WI · 9.8 mi away

Rock River Country Club sits in Waupun, Wisconsin, and today operates under the name The Rock Golf Club. The course opened for play in 1927 and occupies rolling ground along the Rock River in southeastern Wisconsin. The original front nine still carries mature trees from the early routing, while a links-style back nine was reshaped in the early 1980s with 29 sand bunkers and open, wind-exposed fairways. The two nines give the round a split personality: a tighter, tree-framed old side and a more exposed, hazard-heavy new side. The club operates as a semi-private facility, offering memberships alongside outside play, with a pro shop, driving range, and an indoor golf simulator for winter practice. The course plays to about 6,819 yards from the back markers.

Lawsonia Golf Club - Links

Green Lake, WI · 10 mi away

The Links Course at Lawsonia in Green Lake, Wisconsin, opened in 1930 and was designed by William Langford and Theodore Moreau. It is one of the clearest surviving examples of their style, and very little about it has been softened in the decades since. The greens are the reason golfers travel for it. Nearly all of them are pushed up well above the surrounding ground, squared off at the edges, and framed by deep, steep-faced bunkering, so a shot that misses the surface falls a long way down. The seventh green is the most famous, built on top of what local lore says is a buried railroad boxcar, which makes for one of the most severe targets in American golf. The property is open and rolling with wide fairways and long views over Green Lake. It is a daily-fee course, walkable, and sits alongside the club's later Woodlands course.

Lawsonia Golf Course (Woodlands)

Green Lake, WI · 12 mi away

The Woodlands Course at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake, Wisconsin, was designed by architect Rocky Roquemore and opened in 1983 as the newer companion to Lawsonia's classic Links Course. The public, par-72 layout plays about 6,586 yards through wooded terrain, contrasting with the open Links Course nearby. It underwent a renovation directed by architect Craig Haltom, reopening around 2021 with rebuilt bunkers and other updates. The Woodlands operates as part of the Green Lake Conference Center's golf facilities.
