About this course
Golf has been part of Mohonk Mountain House since 1897, when the Smiley family added a nine-hole course to the Victorian castle resort they had been building on the shore of Lake Mohonk since 1869. The resort itself is a National Historic Landmark, and the golf course is one of the oldest in continuous operation in the United States.
The nine-hole layout sits on the resort grounds below the Shawangunk Ridge, with tree-lined holes that play through the mountain property rather than over it. It is a short, walkable round built for resort guests, and it plays that way: the appeal is the setting and the history more than the test of golf.
The course is open to guests of Mohonk Mountain House. The property's broader history is the draw: five generations of the Smiley family have run the resort, and the grounds hosted the Lake Mohonk Conferences on International Arbitration in the years before the First World War.
