About this course
Mauna Lani's South Course is located on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, routed through the ancient Kaniku lava flow with ocean and mountain views. Fairways were built on lava rock with imported topsoil and brackish irrigation water piped from Kohala Mountain.
The course was designed by Homer Flint, Raymond Cain and Robin Nelson and opened in 1981; it is generally considered the more resort-style and forgiving of Mauna Lani's two courses compared with its North Course sibling. It hosted the Senior Skins Game for about a decade in the 1990s and its par-3 15th, played over the ocean, is among the most photographed holes in golf.
The South Course operates as part of the Mauna Lani resort and is open to resort guests and outside players who book tee times; three sets of tees accommodate a range of abilities. Whale watching from the course is common during winter months.

The North Course at Mauna Lani is an 18-hole, par-72 course on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island, designed by Homer Flint and opened in 1981. It plays 6,913 yards from the back tees to a rating of 74.4 and slope of 136. The routing runs through a kiawe forest and past a 230-acre protected archaeological area near the northern boundary. The par-3 17th, roughly 140 yards, plays from an elevated tee to a green set in a natural lava amphitheater. The course was built on lava with imported topsoil and is the companion to Mauna Lani's South Course.
