Co-designed by Mark Miller and LPGA Hall of Famer Patty Sheehan, it is a links-style layout of all par-3 holes, measuring about 1,391 yards from the back tees with bentgrass greens and a 3,500-square-foot practice putting surface. The course has a full clubhouse with a bar and is used heavily by local junior and women's golf programs.

The Lakes Course is one of two 18-hole courses at Red Hawk Golf and Resort in Sparks, Nevada, near Reno, set among wetlands with natural lakes, springs and mature cottonwood trees against the Spanish Springs Valley backdrop. Robert Trent Jones II designed the course, which opened for play in 1997. The layout plays to a par of 72 and stretches to about 7,140 yards from the back tees, with more than 100 bunkers and bentgrass greens spread across the desert setting. The Lakes Course is open to the public, alongside the resort's Hale Irwin-designed Hills Course, a practice facility with a putting course, and a golf shop.

The course features small, challenging greens, significant elevation changes, and deep bunkers. It incorporates elements of a former working ranch with clear lakes. Fairways are undulating, with views of the surrounding mountains and the Spanish Springs Valley. The 6th hole, a par 4 known as "The Beast," is particularly challenging.
