About this course
The Lake Course at Carolina Trace Country Club is an 18-hole layout in Sanford, North Carolina, part of a private golf community built around the 315-acre Lake Trace. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., it opened for play in 1971, with a companion course completed later to form the club's 36 holes. Several holes run along the lake, including a par-3 13th with the water as a backdrop and two risk-reward par-5s bordered by water on the back nine. In 2015 architect David Whelchel led a renovation that rebuilt bunkers, adjusted some fairway contours and lengthened the course while preserving Jones's original routing. The club operates on a semi-private membership model with tee time access for members and guests.

Carolina Trace Country Club: Creek Course
Sanford, NC · 0.0 mi away
The Creek Course is one of two 18-hole layouts at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, North Carolina, within a gated residential community around Lake Trace in the Sandhills region. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1979, the course features dramatic elevation changes and rolling terrain uncommon for the area, along with a meandering creek that affects play on several holes, including the closing stretch. Fairways are narrow and lined with tall pines, and greens are smaller than on the club's companion Lake Course. The 18th green sits on a point of land surrounded by water on three sides. The club is part of a private residential development, though tee times have at times been available to outside players through arrangement.
The Matchbox at Tobacco Road
Sanford, NC · 6.5 mi away
The Matchbox is a short course built alongside the famed Tobacco Road Golf Club in Sanford, North Carolina. It opened in August 2026 near the 12th and 13th fairways of the original Mike Strantz-designed course, on ground that once held spoils from the quarry excavation used to build Tobacco Road in the 1990s. The 12-hole course was designed by Carlton/Marshall Golf Design with Mark White, one of the original shapers who worked under Strantz. Holes range from roughly 40 to 105 yards and wind through trees and around a pond, using synthetic turf blended into the natural ground to avoid clearing trees or installing irrigation. The Matchbox is open to the public alongside Tobacco Road's regular tee-time system, offering a quick round for guests already playing or staying at the property.

Tobacco Road Golf Club
Sanford, NC · 6.7 mi away
Tobacco Road Golf Club in Sanford, North Carolina, opened in 1998 and is the best-known work of Mike Strantz, who designed only a handful of courses before his death in 2005. The site was an abandoned sand quarry, and Strantz used the spoil piles and pits rather than flattening them. The course is deliberately theatrical. Several tee shots play through narrow gaps between towering sand walls with no view of the landing area, and fairways that look impossibly tight from the tee open up dramatically once golfers walk over the crest. Greens are large, wildly contoured and often set at angles that reward one specific approach line. Strantz routed the holes by hand-drawing them on site, and no two look alike. It is a daily-fee course, walkable, and it plays under 6,600 yards from the back tees, which has almost nothing to do with how hard it is. The Pack House serves as Tobacco Road's clubhouse snack counter, while the clubhouse bar, open fireplace, stone porches and rocking chairs overlooking the 18th green create the post-round setting. It feels more like a rustic gathering place than a polished resort restaurant, which suits the course.
