Boyne Mountain Resort (Monument)

Boyne Falls, MI

The Monument is one of two eighteen-hole courses at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls, Michigan, in the northern part of the state. The course dates to 1970, when William Newcomb produced the original design, and individual holes are dedicated to golf figures such as Donald Ross and Robert Trent Jones. The layout asks for a complete game, combining demanding fairways with large, undulating greens that put a premium on approach shots and putting. Six sets of tees stretch from under 5,000 yards to just under 7,000 yards from the back markers. The Monument is bookable by resort guests and outside visitors alike through Boyne Golf, and it operates alongside the resort's other course, the Alpine. A practice area with a full driving range and multiple short game zones sits near the golf shop.

Shanty Creek Resort (Summit)

Bellaire, MI

Summit is the original golf course at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, Michigan, built when resort founder Roy Deskin added golf to the ski and lodging business he had started on Torch Lake. William Diddel designed the course, and it opened in 1965 as the Deskin Course before later being renamed Summit. Length is not the main challenge here; the course instead rewards a strong short game, with fast greens and a par-three tee option on every hole that makes it approachable for junior golfers. The routing winds across the rolling hills of Antrim County that also give Shanty Creek its ski terrain. Summit operates alongside four other courses at the resort, all bookable through one golf shop, and is open to resort guests and outside visitors from April through October.

It was designed by architect William Newcomb and stretches to nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees, with five sets of tees available on every hole to suit a range of playing levels. The routing has a links-style character despite its inland location, and the club has hosted state-level amateur and junior championships, including Michigan Women's and Junior State events, along with USGA Public Links qualifying rounds. The Medalist operates a GPS-based food and beverage ordering system that delivers to golfers on course. A clubhouse pavilion hosts weddings and banquets in addition to regular tee-time play.
