Architect
Perry Maxwell
Perry Maxwell (1879-1952) was an Oklahoma banker who turned to golf course design in his forties and built one of the most respected portfolios of the Golden Age. He created Prairie Dunes Country Club in Kansas and Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, both long-running major championship venues, and he worked with Alister MacKenzie before later carrying out green and bunker work at Pine Valley Golf Club, Colonial Country Club, and Augusta National. Maxwell became known for his "Maxwell rolls," undulating green contours that added subtlety and difficulty without relying on length or heavy bunkering. His son Press Maxwell continued the family practice, and Perry Maxwell's courses keep the firm, natural, wind-exposed character suited to the prairie land he often worked.
