Wilderness Club in Eureka, Montana, opened in 2009 in the Tobacco Valley near the Canadian border, about 10 miles from British Columbia. Nick Faldo designed it with Brian Curley on a 545-acre property of Rocky Mountain woodland, wetland and open meadow. The course plays to a par 72 at just over 7,200 yards and moves between distinctly different settings, with holes cut through stands of pine and larch, others running along wetland and open ground with mountain views in every direction. Fairways are generous, the bunkering is large-scale, and the greens are big enough to handle the elevation and wind. The setting is remote, the season is short, and the course is quiet even in summer, which is part of the appeal. It is a resort course with lodging on site and open to public play.

Palm Desert, CA

Marriott's Shadow Ridge Golf Club is an 18-hole course in Palm Desert, California, forming the golf amenity of the Marriott Shadow Ridge vacation resort in the Coachella Valley. The course opened in 2000 against the backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains and was the first U.S. course designed by Nick Faldo, working with architects Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. The design draws inspiration from Australian sand-belt courses, featuring large, boldly shaped bunkers and native fescue grasses that frame wide fairways. It plays to a par of 71 and stretches to roughly 7,006 yards from the back tees, with demanding green complexes despite its resort setting. The course is open to public play in addition to resort guests, and includes a golf academy and practice facilities. Tee times can be booked up to 30 days in advance, and the course typically closes briefly each fall for annual overseeding.
