Highlands, NC

Old Edwards Club is an 18-hole, par-71 private course in Highlands, North Carolina, designed by Tom Jackson and reopened as a private club in 2009 after a renovation of the former Highlands Cove course. The front nine climbs through mountain terrain with elevated tees and downhill approaches to rolling greens. The back nine, known as the Cove nine, runs through a small valley. The clubhouse has a pro shop and locker rooms. Old Edwards Club is private and open to members and to guests of Old Edwards Inn and Spa, who also have access to dining, tennis, a pool and a fitness center.

Boone, NC

Boone Golf Club sits in a valley just south of Boone, North Carolina, at roughly 3,346 feet of elevation in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Level to gently rolling fairways and large undulating greens are framed by mountain views on every hole. The course was designed by Ellis Maples, who trained under Donald Ross, and opened in 1959. It has operated continuously since, with a routing that mixes par 3s, 4s, and 5s across varied terrain shaped by the surrounding hills and a creek that comes into play on several holes. Boone Golf Club is open to the public, with tee times recommended and groups welcome. Amenities include a pro shop, a putting green, two chipping areas, a practice range, and an on-site cafe. The season runs from April through November.

Buies Creek, NC

Keith Hills Golf Club sits along the Cape Fear River in Buies Creek, North Carolina, and serves as the home course for Campbell University's golf teams and its Professional Golf Management program. The North Course, known as the Creek Course or No. 1, opened in 1973 and was designed by Ellis Maples. It is a par-72 layout of roughly 6,703 yards with large bentgrass greens and rolling, tree-lined fairways typical of a Maples design. Cedarbrook Country Club is an 18-hole course near Elkin, North Carolina, close to the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was designed by Ellis Maples, who trained under Donald Ross and came from a family with deep roots in North Carolina golf course design. The layout moves through rolling countryside, forest, and lakes, with undulating greens on the front nine and holes on the back nine that call for more precise shotmaking. Cedarbrook operates as a semi-private club, open to members as well as outside golfers on weekdays. The clubhouse hosts banquets, weddings, and other private events, and the facility includes a swimming pool and full food and bar service.

Laurel Fork, VA

Olde Mill Golf Resort occupies an 800-plus acre mountain property in Laurel Fork, Virginia, in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the North Carolina line. The resort setting includes rolling fairways, natural elevation change and a large lake near the clubhouse. The course was designed by Ellis Maples and opened in the early 1970s. His son Dan Maples and grandson Brad Maples later carried out a multi-year renovation of the layout, rebuilding bunkers and infrastructure while preserving the original routing and green complexes. Olde Mill operates on a semi-private, resort basis with lodging and homesites on the property. Four sets of tees are offered, and the course has built a regional reputation as one of the notable mountain layouts in Virginia.

Clinton, NC

Coharie Country Club is in Clinton, North Carolina, seat of Sampson County. The original nine holes opened in 1947 as the first course designed by Ellis Maples, a noted North Carolina golf architect, with a second nine added later to complete the current 18-hole routing. The course features a longer, more open front nine and a narrower, tree-lined back nine, with relatively small greens that add difficulty for all skill levels. Though organized as a private club with dues-paying members, dining, tennis, and a pool, the golf course itself is open to outside players who call ahead for a tee time, with posted weekday and weekend guest green fees that include cart use.

Kill Devil Hills, NC

Duck Woods Country Club sits in Southern Shores on North Carolina's Outer Banks, near Kitty Hawk. The 18-hole course was designed by Ellis Maples and opened in the late 1960s, with bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways winding through coastal woodlands, canals and wetlands. The layout is a traditional parkland routing shaped by the low, sandy terrain typical of the barrier island, with water and wetland areas coming into play on a number of holes. The club operates as semi-private, offering member play alongside accompanied and unaccompanied guest access, with tourist rates available seasonally. Amenities include a full-service clubhouse with pro shop, dining and banquet space, plus locker rooms and practice areas. Tee times can be booked up to three weeks ahead for members, and visitors should call the pro shop directly for guest rates and availability.

Greensboro, NC

Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro is an Ellis Maples design that opened in 1962 and hosted the PGA Tour's Greater Greensboro Open from 1977 to 2007. Davis Love III renovated the course in 2002. It measures 7,212 yards from the back tees through mature hardwoods. The club is semi-private and also has tennis and a pool.

Graniteville, SC

Midland Valley Golf Club is a semi-private course located in Graniteville, South Carolina, between Aiken and Augusta, Georgia. Architect Ellis Maples designed the course, which was built in 1960 and 1961 and remains a long standing fixture of the local golf community. The par 72 layout covers about 6,870 yards, with tree lined, walkable fairways set among towering pines and significant changes in terrain. Large, undulating Bermuda greens demand attention to uphill, downhill and sidehill lies throughout the round. New ownership took over in January 2024 and has been renovating turf, bunkers and green surfaces while updating the pro shop and clubhouse, including a new on site restaurant called Horse Creek Tavern that opened in 2024. The course is open year round and is frequently played by visitors during Masters week because of its proximity to Augusta.

Lenoir, NC

Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenoir is an Ellis Maples design that opened in 1965. The 18-hole course reaches 7,153 yards with Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens, and Hibriten Mountain sits in the background. It has hosted regional tournaments over the years. The club publishes daily rates for non-members, and it also has a pool, clay tennis courts and a full practice area.

Siler City, NC

Siler City Country Club has a front nine by Ellis Maples from 1957 and a back nine by Tom Jackson from 1987. The par-72 course has tree-lined fairways and small, sloping TifEagle greens in rolling Chatham County. It takes public play and also offers tennis, pickleball and a pool.

Stoneville, NC

Deep Springs Country Club in Stoneville, North Carolina, was built on land once part of the Deep Springs Plantation, an early nineteenth-century estate along the Dan River. The plantation farmland was sold in 1969 and developed into the golf club and surrounding residential community, with the course designed by Ellis Maples and opened in 1971. The par-72 layout spans roughly 750 acres of rolling Piedmont terrain in the Rockingham County countryside. The original plantation house still stands nearby as a private residence.

Burlington, NC

The Valley Golf Course in Burlington, formerly Indian Valley, is a city-owned Ellis Maples design that opened in 1968 along the Haw River. The par-70 layout bends back and forth and rewards shaping the ball, with well-shaped bunkers. It is open to the public year-round, with a range and short game area.

Smithfield, NC

The Country Club of Johnston County in Smithfield sits near Holt Lake. The club dates to 1936, and its current 18-hole Ellis Maples course opened in 1967. It plays 6,630 yards with Bermuda fairways and greens. The club is semi-private and takes public play daily. A driving range, pool and tennis courts are on site.

Edenton, NC

The Links at Mulberry Hill in Edenton, formerly Chowan Golf and Country Club, is an Ellis Maples design that opened in 1962. The par-72 course plays 6,483 yards through pines and wetlands near the Albemarle Sound, with several ponds. It takes public play and has a driving range and a waterfront dining room.

Chesapeake, VA

Chesapeake Golf Club is an 18-hole semi-private course in the Las Gaviotas section of Chesapeake, Virginia, about fifteen minutes from downtown Norfolk. Designed by Ellis Maples and opened in 1986, the course plays 6,148 yards from the back tees at a par of 71 and features strategically placed water hazards and doglegs. Annual golf and pool memberships are available, but the club also allows public play with online and phone tee times. Two clubhouses support the course along with banquet and event space used for tournaments and gatherings.

Wintergreen, VA

Devils Knob Golf Course is an 18-hole mountaintop course at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia, sitting at an elevation of over 3,850 feet, which the resort describes as the highest golf course in the state. The course was designed by Ellis Maples and offers narrow fairways, fast greens, and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Rockfish Valley. From the championship tees the course plays 6,576 yards to a par of 70. Temperatures at the course typically run cooler than at Wintergreen's other course, Stoney Creek, making it a warm-weather draw as well as a fall foliage destination. Access to Devils Knob is restricted to Wintergreen Club members and registered resort lodging guests; it is not open to the general public, and off-mountain rental guests do not have access.
