Lake Junaluska, NC

Lake Junaluska Golf Course sits at the west end of Lake Junaluska in the mountains near Waynesville, North Carolina, on the grounds of the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center. The course opened in 1919, initially as nine holes, with guests once arriving by train and crossing the lake by boat to play. An old farmhouse served as the original clubhouse, and the course expanded to 18 holes during a 1990s renovation. It marked its centennial in 2019 with a year-long series of events drawing on decades of local history. The course underwent further improvements beginning in 2018 aimed at restoring its condition and profitability. It remains open to the public as part of the retreat center's recreational offerings.
