The Country Club of South Carolina in Florence is an Ellis Maples design that opened in 1968 on a 900-acre property where Black Creek winds through the fairways. The par-72 layout stretches to about 7,060 yards from the back tees, with the front nine looping around Polk Swamp and the back nine wandering through native wetlands and woods. Maples, a Donald Ross protege and patriarch of the Carolinas-based Maples design firm, used the region's forests and creeks to echo the sandhills courses of North Carolina with a battery of bunkers. The 460-yard 18th makes a hard dogleg left around a lagoon to a well-bunkered green and is the No. 1 handicap hole. The club is open to public play seven days a week and was recognized on Golfweek's Best Courses You Can Play list for South Carolina.
