Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club
Front Royal, VA · 3.0 mi away
Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club is an 18-hole daily-fee course in Front Royal, Virginia, near the Shenandoah Valley, designed by architect Tom Clark of Ault, Clark & Associates. Clark began planning the course with owners John Hopkins and Rick Magalis in 2002, and it opened for play in 2007 after several years of development on a tight budget. The layout is split into two distinct nines: a hilly, tree-lined front nine carved through hardwood forest, and a more open back nine routed around wetlands and water hazards, including Crooked Creek along the par-4 15th. The course measures up to roughly 7,400 yards from the back tees and is open to public play, adjacent to a hotel overlooking part of the course.
The Schoolhouse Nine
Sperryville, VA · 24 mi away
The Schoolhouse Nine is a 9-hole public course in Sperryville, Virginia, made up entirely of par 3s between 85 and 171 yards, par 27 over about 1,206 yards. It opened in July 2015 as the first course in Rappahannock County and was designed by Mike McCartin, who worked as a shaper for Tom Doak. Construction moved almost no earth: only the greens and tees were disturbed. The holes wander through native wildflower meadows along the Thornton River, past the stone ruins of the old Smoot Tannery, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Check-in is inside the historic Sperryville schoolhouse next to Headmaster's Pub, and pull carts come with a membership.
