Red Tail Golf Club sits in Devens, Massachusetts, on land that was part of the former Fort Devens army base roughly 35 miles west of Boston. The course was built over former barracks foundations and an old ammunition storage area, and remnants of that military history, including a guard tower and munitions bunkers, remain visible along the layout.
Brian Silva designed the 18-hole course, which opened in 2002 and plays to a par of 72 at roughly 7,000 yards. The routing separates into two nines divided by about a quarter mile, and greens are shaped to blend into the surrounding hillsides, with sandy waste areas on some holes and blind shots on others.
Red Tail operates as a public course open to daily-fee play. Carts and a pro shop are available, and the course was recognized as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in New England.
