It was designed by architect Ted Locke, who aimed to preserve the open, rolling character of the farmland site rather than adding trees or hills. The course plays as a links-style layout with broad fairways, flowering meadows and firm turf, allowing running approach shots on many greens. It measures about 6,793 yards from the back tees at a par of 72, and prevailing winds off the open terrain are a defining feature, along with water hazards that come into play on numerous holes. Dakota Creek Golf Course is a public 18-hole course in Custer, Washington, about five minutes from the Canadian border. It began as a nine-hole layout built on former dairy farmland, with an old farmhouse and barn still standing on the property. The course was designed by owner-operator Pam Foster, who sketched holes by hand before building them; a back nine was added along a ridge that climbs roughly 250 feet, giving wide views toward Mount Baker and the San Juan Islands. Dakota Creek remains locally owned and open to public play year-round, known for wildlife including bald eagles, deer, and salmon spawning grounds along the course.
