About this course
The Crispin Course is part of Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia, set within Oglebay Park, a former industrialist's estate that became public parkland in 1928. Local golfer and professional Robert Biery designed and built the course, which opened with sand greens in 1930 before becoming a permanent 18-hole layout a few years later.
The design reflects the techniques and limited equipment of its era, with steep slopes and severe elevation changes uncommon on newer courses. A maple tree planted along the 11th fairway at construction has since grown into a well-known obstacle for golfers trying to reach the green.
Crispin plays to about 5,670 yards from its longest tees and is one of several golf courses at Oglebay Resort, alongside newer Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Arnold Palmer designs. It remains open year-round as part of the resort's public golf offering.
