About this course
May River Golf Club at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina, is a Jack Nicklaus design that opened in 2004. It sits on a 20,000-acre preserve between the May and Cooper rivers, in a setting of live oaks, salt marsh and tidal creeks.
The course was built with no cart paths, so the corridors read as continuous turf from tee to green, and the routing was laid out to protect the existing oak stands rather than clear them. Fairways are wide, the bunkering is sandy and shallow in places, and the greens are large. Several holes finish alongside the marsh with the river beyond.
Walking with a caddie is the standard here, and pace and quiet are part of the experience. Access is for club members and guests of the Montage Palmetto Bluff resort.

Hilton Head National Golf Club
Bluffton, SC · 4.0 mi away
Hilton Head National Golf Club sits in Bluffton, about a mile from the bridge to Hilton Head Island, and opened on November 1, 1989. It is a split design, with the front nine by Bobby Weed and the back nine by Gary Player. The holes run among live oak hammocks and preserved Lowcountry wildlife areas that were kept intact as part of the layout. The two nines reflect their different designers, so the round shifts in character at the turn rather than following one architectural hand. Water and wetland margins come into play throughout without dominating the test.
Old South Golf Links
Bluffton, SC · 4.5 mi away
Old South Golf Links sits just over the bridge from Hilton Head Island in Bluffton, on land bordering the May River and its tidal marsh. Clyde Johnston designed it and it opened in 1991. The routing moves between Lowcountry marsh, pine woodland and river frontage, and the back nine in particular is exposed to water and wind. At a par of 72 and 6,772 yards it asks for angles managed around marsh carries rather than length. It remains one of the better-known Johnston layouts in the Lowcountry.
Crescent Pointe Golf Club
Bluffton, SC · 4.5 mi away

The design includes dramatic white sand bunkers and spectacular marsh views characteristic of the Lowcountry. Rolling terrain and subtle elevation changes provide variety, while century-old oaks and towering pines frame the playing corridors throughout the property.
