About this course

Lion Hills is a public 18-hole golf course in Columbus, Mississippi, owned and operated by East Mississippi Community College. The course opened in 1923 and was designed by architect John Frazier, making it one of the older courses in the state. It plays to a par of 72 and measures 6,410 yards from the longest tees, with a course rating of 71.2 and a slope of 129 across four sets of tees. Beyond golf, the Lion Hills facility includes tennis courts, a swimming pool, a banquet room, and a commercial kitchen, and it supports EMCC's culinary arts, hospitality, turf management, and landscape management programs, giving students hands-on training on site. The course is open to the public year round, with green fees varying by time of day, and offers memberships alongside daily play. A driving range and pro shop are also available to golfers.

Mossy Oak Golf Club

West Point, MS · 13 mi away

Mossy Oak Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, was designed by Gil Hanse and opened in 2016 on open prairie next to the Old Waverly property. Hanse worked with a wide, largely treeless site and used ground contour rather than water to shape the golf, building wide corridors with native grasses scattered through the margins. The fairways run firm and the turf is kept fast, so shots release and the course plays shorter than the yardage suggests. Bunkering has ragged, sandy edges rather than a formal look, and the large greens allow running approaches from well short of the putting surface. It is walkable, with caddies available, and plays about 7,200 yards from the back tees. It is open to public play, and it was built to look and play differently from the water-driven Old Waverly course next door.

Mississippi State University Golf Course

Starkville, MS · 19 mi away

The Mississippi State University Golf Course is located on the MSU campus in Starkville and serves as the home facility for the university's PGA Golf Management program and its men's and women's golf teams. Architect Brian Ault designed the 18-hole championship layout, which opened in 1986. Water comes into play on nine holes, including a stretch of three lakeside holes along the back nine, and mature pine trees line several of the longer par fours. The course is owned and operated by the university but open to the public, with tee times available to students, alumni, and general golfers, along with a pro shop and full practice facilities.
