Cassel Hills Golf Course
Championship golf in the Taylorsville Nature Reserve.
About this course
Located just north of Dayton in Vandalia, Cassel Hills Golf Course operates as a municipal facility within the Taylorsville Nature Reserve. Established in 1974, the course presents two distinct nines that create a varied playing experience. The front nine features relatively flat terrain reminiscent of links-style play, while the back nine transitions into more significant hilliness. Five par 3s are spread throughout the 18-hole, par 71 layout, making the course play longer than its 6,655 yards. Large greens average 6,000 square feet and require precise lag putting and careful club selection. The facility is open to the public and serves as a premier destination in the Miami Valley. Natural scenery from the surrounding nature reserve defines the environment.

In 2025 the club built 16 new and expanded tees, planted more than 100 trees and added new bridges on the back nine. A new irrigation system and a new pond on holes 4 and 5 followed in 2026. It is five minutes off Interstate 70, with golf simulators in the clubhouse.

The par-72 layout stretches to roughly 7,030 yards from the back tees and has bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens. The course has earned Audubon Certification for its turf and wildlife management practices and is recognized in Golf Digest's Places to Play guide. It draws more than 39,000 rounds a year and has hosted numerous tournaments over its history. Amenities include a driving range, putting green, banquet facilities, and a bar. The front and back nines were reversed in 2000, and the course has added GPS-equipped carts and ongoing bunker and cart path improvements in recent years.
Yankee Trace Golf Club
Centerville, OH · 18 mi away
The Golf Club at Yankee Trace sits on about 150 acres in Centerville, a suburb south of Dayton, Ohio, within a natural preserve along Yankee Street. The city-owned facility opened its first 18 holes in the spring of 1995, with a third nine added in 2002, giving the property 27 holes across three nine-hole courses: Heritage, Vintage and Legend. All three nines were designed by architect Gene Bates, who returned in 2002 to route the additional holes through the surrounding community. The layout combines rolling terrain with water features and bunkering typical of a modern daily-fee course, with multiple tee sets for a range of abilities. Yankee Trace is a public course operated by the City of Centerville, with a large clubhouse for dining and events. Golfers can play any of the three nines in different 18-hole combinations, and the course is open year round with seasonal hour changes.
