Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport, Maine, is a Walter Travis design dating to 1920, when Travis reworked an earlier layout on the banks of the Kennebunk River. It plays as a par 69 at just over 5,800 yards, which makes it one of the shortest well-regarded courses in New England.
The defense is entirely in the greens. Travis built small, sharply crowned putting surfaces that repel approach shots, several of them perched so that a slightly heavy or thin shot rolls well away. Stone walls, the river and the tight routing across a compact property add to the problem, and there is very little room to miss.
The course is best known outside golf as the summer home course of President George H.W. Bush, whose family has played there for generations. It is a semi-private club with public tee times available.
