Bide-A-Wee Golf Course
Portsmouth, VA · 6.1 mi away
Bide-A-Wee Golf Course is a city-owned course in Portsmouth that first opened in 1920. Chandler Harper ran it for years, and Curtis Strange, who learned there as a teenager, worked with architect Tom Clark on a full rebuild completed around 1999. The rebuild took out thousands of pines that shaded the course and added eight lakes on what was flat, wet ground. It also brought new greens, bunkers and a practice area. It plays as a par 72. It is open to the public, with a pro shop, grill and a pavilion for events.
Stumpy Lake Golf Course
Virginia Beach, VA · 8.5 mi away
Stumpy Lake Golf Course is set within a roughly 1,400-acre nature preserve in Virginia Beach, Virginia, bordering its namesake lake near the city's boundary with Chesapeake. The surrounding land is undeveloped forest, and the course sees regular sightings of deer, fox, and ospreys. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in the 1950s. It plays over mostly flat terrain with Bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens, wrapping around the lake with water coming into play on several holes. Stumpy Lake is open to the public and located just off Interstate 64, drawing golfers from across the region. Beyond the course, the property includes a fishing pier, a canoe and kayak launch, and a nature trail, and it operates year-round.
