William Bell

Phoenix, AZ

Papago Golf Course is a municipal layout in Phoenix set beneath the red sandstone buttes of Papago Park, with the landmark Hole-in-the-Rock formation visible from parts of the property. William F. Bell designed it and it opened in 1963, making it one of the older public courses in the valley. A major renovation completed in 2008 restored and modernized Bell's design, including work around the par-3 11th's lake and the risk-reward par-5 ninth. Papago serves as the home course for Arizona State University's golf teams. Its mature trees and open, parkland-style fairways set it apart from the desert-target courses common elsewhere in Phoenix.

La Jolla, CA

The North Course sits on the La Jolla bluffs beside its longer sibling, the South, on land owned by the City of San Diego overlooking the Pacific. William F. Bell designed it in 1957. In 2016, Tom Weiskopf led a redesign that reshaped bunkers, greens and several holes to give the North its own character rather than serving only as a warm-up round. The course plays to a par of 72 at 7,258 yards from the back tees, with a course rating of 75.8 and a slope of 134. It is the shorter and generally friendlier of the two Torrey Pines layouts, though it shares the same coastal wind and cliffside exposure. Tee times are booked through the City of San Diego, keeping it open to the public.

Palm Springs, CA

The South Course at Indian Canyons Golf Resort is located in Palm Springs, California, at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, on land of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. More than 500 native California fan palms, sacred to the Agua Caliente people, are found throughout the course. The South Course was remodeled in 2004 by architect Casey O'Callaghan, working with LPGA player Amy Alcott as a playing consultant. The renovation reworked the routing and added several lakes, creating a scenic layout with four ponds and five par-5 holes. Indian Canyons is open to the public and features individual clubhouses for its North and South courses. The South Course measures roughly 6,580 yards from its longest tees, with forward tees around 4,880 yards, and golfers have access to practice facilities on site.

Phoenix, AZ

The Arizona Biltmore's original Adobe golf course opened in 1928 in the Biltmore Estates neighborhood of Phoenix, designed by William Bell and sited near the Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Camelback Mountain. It was one of the state's oldest courses and long carried the Adobe name. In 2023 the club completed a renovation led by architect Tom Lehman that reshaped tees, greens, and bunkers, removed a hole, and rerouted portions of the layout; the course reopened in 2024 under a new name, the Estates Course, reflecting the surrounding upscale neighborhood. It now plays to a par of 71 at just under 6,700 yards from the back tees. The club operates alongside a second course, the Links, and is open to members and the public, with a clubhouse, restaurant, and views of downtown Phoenix and the surrounding mountains.

Phoenix, AZ

The Links Course is one of two golf courses at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club in Phoenix, situated near the Phoenix Mountain Preserve adjacent to the historic Arizona Biltmore Hotel. It was built in 1979 and designed by architect Bill Johnston, making it the older of the club's two courses following a later renovation by Forrest Richardson. The course has notable elevation change for the Phoenix area, with tree-lined fairways, several lakes and a par-3 15th hole perched on a mountainside with a steep drop to the green. It plays to a par of 71 across 18 holes at roughly 6,300 yards. The Links Course operates as part of a resort golf facility, available to hotel guests and members along with public tee times booked through the club's pro shop.

Kailua-Kona, HI

The Ocean Course at Kona Country Club runs along the lava shoreline of Keauhou, south of Kailua-Kona. It is an 18-hole, par 72 course with holes that play beside the surf and black lava rock, and it is the club's one remaining course since the Mountain Course closed in 2013. Visitors can book tee times.

Ventura, CA

Just three miles away from the Olivas Links, Buenaventura Golf Course offers more of the happy same; again, a city course at a city course price. It’s been making local golfers happy since 1932 and has undergone several multi-million dollar renovations. Like its partner down the road, it offers cool summertime temperatures.

Gilroy, CA

Gilroy has three golf courses. The 11-hole Gilroy Golf Course offers budget-friendly green fees. Eagle Ridge Golf Club has a challenging course and a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar. CordeValle Resort features a championship course that hosted the 2016 U. S. Women’s Open.

La Crosse, WI

Forest Hills Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-71 public golf course in La Crosse, Wisconsin, with play documented on the property as early as 1892. The course sits within bluffs shaped by three rivers that meet near La Crosse. A 2015-2016 renovation led by Jacobson Golf Course Design created two entirely new holes and redesigned three others, including an underpass beneath the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks linking the clubhouse to the course. Forest Hills also added a new driving range in 2020 in La Crosse.
