The Short Course at Mountain Shadows

Paradise Valley, AZ

The Short Course at Mountain Shadows, redesigned by Forrest Richardson in 2017, offers a unique and engaging par-54 experience in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Richardson, a protégé of the original course architect Arthur Jack Snyder, reimagined the layout as an 18-hole par-3 course, honoring the site's history while introducing modern design flourishes. His philosophy focused on creating a fun, fast-paced, and approachable course for all skill levels, emphasizing strategic shot-making and dazzling green complexes. The course is renowned for its dramatic views of Camelback Mountain and features a variety of memorable holes, including the bonus 17.5 hole, known as "The Forrest Wager," which serves as a playful tie-breaker. The minimalist design integrates seamlessly with the desert landscape, offering delicate contouring and thoughtful shot options. The Short Course at Mountain Shadows is a local favorite, perfect for honing short game skills or enjoying a quick, entertaining round amidst stunning scenery.

Baylands Golf Links

Palo Alto, CA

Baylands Golf Links, Palo Alto's revived muni run by O.B. Sports, has become a part of my regular playing rotation since reopening in 2018 after a seven-year, $12-million redesign by Forrest Richardson. With five par 5s and five par 3s, and plenty of room to spray it in the ever-present wind, it's a fun walk. Its links characteristics are somewhat mitigated by the Seashore Paspalum turf, a grabby style of grass that doesn't cater to bump-and-run shots.

The Ranch Golf Club

San Jose, CA

Nestled in the eastern foothills of Silicon Valley, The Ranch Golf Club, designed by Casey O'Callaghan and opened in 2004, offers a challenging yet rewarding experience with panoramic views of the Bay Area. O'Callaghan's design philosophy emphasizes navigating narrow, slanted fairways and punishing rough, demanding precision and strategic shot-making over raw power. The course features bent grass greens and cool-season grass fairways, set against a backdrop of natural hillsides and large oak trees. The signature 15th hole, a downhill par-3, is particularly memorable with its treacherous bunker splitting a devilishly tiered green, requiring a precise approach. Despite some past maintenance challenges, the layout consistently receives praise for its engaging design and the stunning vistas it provides. Playing The Ranch is a true test of skill and course management, offering a secluded refuge from urban distractions and a truly memorable round for golfers seeking a strategic challenge amidst beautiful scenery.
