Desmond Muirhead

Wilmington, VT

Haystack Golf Club in Wilmington, Vermont was designed by architect Desmond Muirhead and opened in 1972. The 18-hole, par-72 semi-private course plays to roughly 6,549 yards from the back tees over gently rolling terrain that avoids the blind shots typical of mountain courses. Bentgrass fairways and greens make up the layout, which includes an on-site restaurant. The course is open to public play with four sets of tees.

Scottsdale, AZ

McCormick Ranch Golf Club's Palm course is located in the heart of Scottsdale, Arizona, on land that was part of the McCormick family's cattle and Arabian horse ranch before it was developed in the early 1970s. Camelback and McDowell Mountain are visible across the property. Desmond Muirhead designed the Palm course, which opened in 1972 alongside a companion Pine course at the same facility. Water comes into play on about ten holes, and the layout has hosted a Canadian Tour event in the past. The eighteen-hole, par-72 course is open to public play year round, with a large putting green, two chipping areas and a driving range shared with the adjoining Pine course.

Scottsdale, AZ

The Pine Course is one of two 18-hole layouts at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, part of a master-planned community developed on former ranchland once used for cattle and Arabian horse breeding by Anne and Fowler McCormick. Both the Pine and Palm courses were designed by Desmond Muirhead and opened in 1972. The Pine is the longer of the two courses and plays tighter off the tee, with water hazards coming into play on a number of holes through the relatively flat, park-like Scottsdale Greenbelt. The club is open to the public 365 days a year, with mountain views of Camelback and McDowell Mountain, a large practice putting green, chipping areas and a driving range on site.
